Kick-Start Your Entrepreneurial Pursuits

Re-Focus -- Act Now

It's often been said, "a wise man will make more opportunities than he finds." Have you been making the most of your opportunities?

Now that we are reaching the halfway point of the year, it's time to reassess your goals and take action on your ideas. No more dragging your heels. No more excuses as to why you can't get started. Don't be one of those folks who says the glass is half-empty.

Nonsense, the glass is half full!

If you're looking for better results from your marketing efforts, or if you'd like to become the new resource the media calls, then you'll have to remember, your success is a matter of choice, not chance. Your destiny is in your hands.

Act now, and re-program yourself for success, by nurturing your unique creativity and imagination for achieving your marketing and publicity goals. Give yourself a little credit for your unique talents.

Here are a few questions to get you started:

  • What sets you apart from your competition?
  • Is your business the only one of its kind in town?
  • Are you the oldest, the youngest, or the only person in your line of business?
  • Do you have an unusual hobby or interest for someone in your field or endeavor?
  • Can others benefit from knowing about your talents and experiences?
  • Will it be of interest to others in related fields?

Looking for an 'unusual' angle to entice the media?

Health---Sex---and Money are the three topics that are most often covered by the media. If you've got an interesting angle they can use, along with some statistics, or survey results, to back up your claims, it will make it that much easier to attract their attention. If so, then contact the media with your ideas. (*I did, and in March of this year, it resulted in two articles, in different Chicago area publications. One was about my work in marketing and publicity, and the other was about my passion for decorating---getting that 'monied' look, without spending a fortune'!)

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Look for other avenues to become well known.

More often than not, you'll have a better chance if you become known in trade publications, newsletters, or publications written for the civic or business organizations that you belong to.

And don't forget, when something interesting happens in your life, let everyone know about it!!

  • Let your alma mater know. They'll probably include it in the alumnae newsletter.
  • Send a blurb to your present and former customers.
  • Call your radio talk show hosts.
  • Write a letter to the editor.
  • >Get 'testimonials' from your satisfied customers.
  • Sponsor an open house or demonstration, attended an expo, volunteer, etc…..The media is filled with stories that take an indirect route to giving folks a bit of free media exposure, so take advantage of it today.
Be ready with lots of anecdotes, and tips to share about your business. Better yet, start writing your ideas on paper and write an article or two, maybe even a guidebook that you can offer to potential clients.
