New Media Marketing

Marketing on the internet should not throw you for a loop. All the old principles of solid marketing hold true on the internet although there is a bit more emphasis on public relations activities than there is on advertising.

  • Internet is just one more facet of business -- it has some peculiarities like
  • enabling us to do business with people we may never have met in person
  • requiring special emphasis on developing relationships with
  • challenging us to find ways to interact and do business without resorting to in-your-face marketing (the next step we need to take in order to make the internet a viable business option)

While some people are opting to make the internet their total business others are using it as an extension to other business activities. Yet others are still resisting the movement toward cyber economies. Which is right? Both. It depends on what you're trying to accomplish and where your strengths lie.

It's a big wide world and there's room for all -- including those who hold widely divergent business philosophies. More important we're learning as never before that niches are about all any one person can handle effectively. And niches can produce a good livelihood for anyone who works them conscientiously.

Where am I leading? To this: if you are (or want to be) in business involving the internet you need to utilize the various tools and opportunities that are available to you. Study your market and utilize the tools that have been made available for this special market. Some businesses are a natural for this environment — other businesses will struggle because they simply aren't easily adapted (in those cases the internet works best as a marketing tool supporting a business in the real world).
