YOUR FUTURE IS .... NOW!

There's a standing joke here in town. But there is a very serious message behind it.

If you happen to call me, you'll get a cheery "Merry Christmas!" message on my answering machine if I don't happen to be here to pick up the phone.

This started as a practical matter. Changing my message just wasn't a priority after the holidays. I was spending most of my business hours at my desk during the blustery Chicago winter.

But then, spring came with 65 degree weather and flowers in full bloom and I started spending more time networking out in the real world. Guess what happened. People who called were in for a surprise...and so was I. The reactions that message brought taught me a lesson. I've decided to leave it there awhile.

People actually sat up and took notice! We've been having fun with this - and many a good laugh. Isn't that why we choose to run our own businesses?

But there is a serious side to this as well.

You see, we're all living in multiple time zones. Much as most of us dislike this state of affairs, it is a necessity in this crazy world.

We really do want to focus our attention on the present -- it's our gift and we don't want to lose it because of neglect. So that comes first! At the same time, those of us who are maintaining websites, writing for publication, painting and crafting gifts for Christmas, or running businesses based on the ebb and flow of seasons know that last minute preparations just don't cut it in business.

It's time to get serious about holiday preparations!

It takes time to plan and complete projects so that they'll be ready on time. There's supplies to order... techniques to practice and perfect...lots of work to be done if those projects and crafts will be ready for market on time. Magazine articles and books need to be finished and sent to the publisher now if we want them published for Christmas 2004. Shops, both online and off, are already planning seasonal inventory. Marketing, website submissions and public relations campaigns all take time...there's no time to lose.

For success, think "Merry Christmas" now...even while you're enjoying your picnics, gardening and summer vacations.
