HEAT ALERT

When the temperature skyrockets, as it has this summer, concern for health is at an all-time high. While the excess heat makes us a bit more prone to spending our days in less active pursuits, it would be a good idea to take a look at our eating and drinking habits.

Food - the right food - is critical to our well-being. Each individual is chemically different so a healthy diet for one will not necessarily be a healthy diet for another. But, fresh fruits and vegetables are bountiful this time of year. They're perfect nourishment. They're easy to prepare. Most can simply be washed and eaten whole just as they come from the plant. Or for a truly delightful treat combine them into delicious, refreshing salads. No need to slave in a hot kitchen.

But another consideration -- and one we need to pay special attention to now --is WATER. How much water do you drink? (Now be honest, we're not talking about coffee, tea and soda pop.)

You probably won't find many doctors who will check you  water intake when you have an ailment. But you'd be surprised at how critical water is to your well-being. If you honestly said you drink less than 5-8 8-ounce glasses of water a day, you're certainly not alone. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

Unfortunately, too often we mistake our craving for water as a craving for food. Is it any wonder that 55% of Americans are grossly overweight? Try this. When you can't seem to put your finger on that "something" that you are craving and nothing looks particularly appetizing, fix yourself a tall glass of ice-cold water.

Here are some interesting facts that research shows:

1) even MILD dehydration slows down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

2) One glass of water will shut down hunger pangs.

3) Lack of water is the #1 cause of chronic fatigue.

3) 8-10 glasses of water a day can significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

4) A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

5) Drinking five glasses of water daily decreases your risk of colon cancer by 45%, can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and decreases the likelihood of developing bladder cancer by 50%.

While we need to be more conscious of our water intake during the dog-days of summer, this should be a year-round / life-long concern for all of us. Whenever you see all the old people around who are all bent over, dried out and shriveled up, let them be a reminder to you. Don't let yourself be water deficient, too!

INFORMATION

Are you getting more comfortable finding things on the internet? Have the search engines proven to be your best friends as you surf the net looking for information that interests you?

That's good. But if you've been at this for any length of time, you have already noticed that your searches are pulling up a much higher percentage of in-your-face advertising and promotions. Many of them don't even remotely relate to what you're looking for.

No, it's not you. We're seeing a direct clash between what business wants to do with the internet and how users view  this modern day marvel.

Businesses see the internet as the perfect cost-effective marketing vehicle. And they're right. It costs a whole lot less to send promotional emails to people than it does using the post office. And it costs a whole lot less to throw up a website than it does to find out what publications you're reading these days and place ads in them. 

But we, surfers, have a different view of the internet and its capacities. We see it as a communication tool. And, we use the internet much as we use the library -- to get information about those things that interest us most. Our children have been using the internet as a research tool to get homework done. Many of us have expanded our horizons, learned more about the things that we enjoy, discovered new interests and found new friends on the internet.

Now, it's no wonder that search engines are catering to advertisers. They do have to make a living, too. If you're interested in this turn of events, and want more information, you might want to take a look at the following:

This article cites Lycos, HotBot, AltaVista, LookSmart, MSN.com, Netscape, iWon and Direct Hit, owned by Ask Jeeves, for blurring the edges between blatant advertising and objective search results. On these search engines you'll find ads listed as "Featured Links" or "Partner Results" rather than being clearly identified as paid by sponsors. 

The article further says that MSN, AltaVista and LookSmart accept payments for inclusion in their editorial results. Part of this shift in advertising stems from the fact that we have learned to look past banner ads when we go to various sites. And businesses are trying to find another inroad into our consciousness. And part of it comes from advertisers trying to distinguish themselves and their messages.

This may not bother you at all. But if it does, then you may want to shift your searching to other engines that are holding out in this mad dash for advertising dollars. The report commends three search engines that continue to maintain their unbiased "editorial" integrity: Google, Yahoo and Excite, three of the industry's leaders. That's not to say that these search engines don't carry advertising...they do. But ads are clearly identified as ads. 

If you want to help maintain the integrity of the internet -- and avoid slogging through countless advertisements to get to good solid information you might want to add these three search engines to your list of favorites.
